Denby Saturn was introduced in 1987 as part of Denby’s Discovery Collection and designed by Claire Bernard, one of the pottery’s most influential designers of the period. Produced on the Sherwood shape, it reflects the move towards more contemporary styling in Denby’s late twentieth century ranges.
The design is centred around a speckled grey ‘hares-fur’ glaze, overlaid with widely spaced vertical lines in a darker tone. This simple but effective decoration gives Saturn a strong visual identity while retaining the practicality and durability expected from Denby stoneware.
Saturn is often compared to earlier designs such as Denby Studio, sharing a similar use of vertical line decoration, though with a more refined and spaced-out appearance that reflects changing design tastes of the late 1980s.
Like other Sherwood-based ranges, Saturn was produced as a full service, including a wide selection of tableware and serving pieces, all designed for everyday use.
Now discontinued, Denby Saturn is sought after by collectors and those looking to replace or extend an existing set. Availability can vary depending on the piece, as stock depends on what becomes available in the pre-loved market.
When matching Denby Saturn, it is worth noting that variations can occur in the tone of the grey glaze and the strength of the vertical line decoration. These subtle differences are typical of Denby’s production methods and add to the character of the pattern.
