Denby, Prices and the Pre-Loved Market… A Bit of Perspective

Denby, Prices and the Pre-Loved Market… A Bit of Perspective

Following recent news around Denby and the appointment of administrators, we have noticed a growing conversation across the pre-loved market… and, in some cases, rising prices to match.

It is perhaps an understandable reaction. When a well-known name faces uncertainty, the assumption is often that availability will tighten and values will increase. However, when it comes to replacement tableware, the reality is a little more nuanced.

If you have not yet seen the latest news, you can read more here:
More redundancies as manufacturing ends at Denby

Will Denby Become Harder to Find?

In short… not in the way many people might expect.

A large proportion of the Denby we handle every day consists of patterns that were discontinued many years, and in some cases decades, ago. Designs such as Arabesque, Greenwheat, Manor Green and many others have not been in production for a long time, yet they continue to circulate through the pre-loved market in a steady and reliable way.

The recent situation does not change that. These pieces already exist in significant numbers, and their availability is driven by households passing items on, downsizing, or clearing cupboards, rather than current factory production.

What About More Recent Designs?

For more modern ranges, the same principle largely applies, just over a longer timeframe.

Even where production may slow or stop, items do not suddenly disappear. They continue to enter the pre-loved market gradually, just as they always have. In many ways, this is simply the natural lifecycle of tableware… new pieces become established in homes, are used over time, and eventually find their way back into circulation.

The real impact of the current situation is not so much on existing patterns, but on what comes next. Designs that have not yet been created, or ranges that may never now be developed, are where the long-term change is most likely to be felt.

Denby will simply become a. much loved British pottery of the past, in the same way Hornsea Pottery, Midwinter and many others have.

Why Are Prices Increasing?

We have seen some noticeable price increases in places such as Facebook Marketplace and charity shops, particularly on more recognisable Denby patterns.

In many cases, this appears to be driven by perception rather than true scarcity. The idea that “Denby might disappear” can lead to a short-term spike in asking prices, even for pieces that are still widely available.

As with many collectable markets, moments like this can create a degree of overreaction. Over time, pricing usually settles back to reflect actual supply and demand.

Our Approach at MrPottery

At MrPottery, our focus has always been on providing a reliable, fair and consistent source of replacement china.

We will not artificially inflate prices in response to short-term market noise. The value of a piece should reflect its true availability, condition and demand… not speculation.

We source from the pre-loved market every day, and that market continues to function as it always has. Pieces come through regularly, across a wide range of patterns and periods, and our aim is simply to make those available to customers who need them.

A Reassuring Thought

If you are looking to replace or complete your Denby set, the most important thing to remember is this… the vast majority of pieces are already out there.

They are in homes, cupboards, lofts and sideboards across the country, and they will continue to reappear over time. That has always been the case, and it is not something that changes overnight.

If anything, moments like this tend to remind people of what they have, which can actually lead to more pieces coming back into circulation in the longer term.

As always, if you are looking for a particular Denby piece, you can browse our current stock or get in touch and we will be happy to help you find what you need.
