Why Your China Might Not Quite Match... and Why That's Ok
Publié par Mike Eley le

At first glance, it seems simple.
You’ve got a plate. You find the same pattern. You replace it.
Job done.
Except… when it arrives, it’s not quite the same.
The colour feels slightly different. The pattern looks a little stronger, or softer. Maybe the glaze catches the light in a different way.
And suddenly you’re thinking… have I ordered the wrong thing?
You’re Not Imagining It
This is one of the most common questions we hear.
And the short answer is, you’re not wrong… but you’re not wrong in the way you might think.
Even within the same pattern, variation is completely normal.
Why It Happens
There are a few reasons why pieces from the same pattern don’t always match exactly.
1. Different production periods
Many patterns were made over a number of years, sometimes decades.
During that time:
- Colours can shift slightly
- Glazes can change
- Decoration can be refined or simplified
- Weight and size of individual items change slightly with mould wear
A plate made in 1972 may not look identical to one made in 1985… even though they are technically the same pattern.
A really good example of this is Denby "Arabesque" where early pieces were hand-painted and later pieces had transfers applied. We talk more about this in our pattern guide for Denby "Arabesque".
2. Hand decoration and finishing
With many designs, especially earlier ones, elements were hand applied.
That means:
- Pattern placement can vary
- Colours may appear stronger or softer
- Small details may differ
These differences aren’t faults… they’re part of the character of the piece.
3. Everyday use
Over time, china changes.
Years of use can lead to:
- Slight fading of decoration
- Softening of glaze
- General wear that alters appearance
So even if you find an “exact” replacement, your original piece may have aged into something slightly different.
4. Lighting and surroundings
It sounds simple, but it matters.
The same piece can look different depending on:
- Natural or artificial light
- Table colour
- What it’s sitting next to
What looks like a mismatch at first can often settle in once it’s back in it's rightful place.
The Reality of Replacement China
When you’re buying from the pre-loved market, perfection isn’t always the goal.
Matching is about:
- Getting the right pattern
- Finding a piece that works within your set
- Keeping something you love in use
A slight variation is often part of that journey.
And That’s Part of the Charm
In many ways, these small differences are what give a set its character.
They tell a story:
- Pieces added over time
- Replacements found and fitted back in
- A set that has evolved with you and your family, not just been bought
And when everything is on the table together, those differences tend to fade into the background.
A Familiar Situation?
If you’ve ever wondered whether something “quite matches”, you’re definitely not alone.
Most of the discontinued china we help replace comes with exactly this question.
If you’re unsure whether you’ve got the right pattern, or just want a second opinion, we’re always happy to help.
