Poole Pottery “Summer Glory” – History, Design & Collectability

Poole Pottery Summer Glory is a richly decorated floral design that captures the warmer, more rustic tones of late summer and early autumn. Produced during the same period as Springtime, it offers a deeper, more mature alternative while retaining the practicality and charm of Poole’s mid-century tableware.

With its combination of stylised flowers, seed heads and grasses in warm earthy tones, Summer Glory brings a cosy, nostalgic feel to the table.

History of Poole Summer Glory

Summer Glory was introduced during a transformative period for Poole Pottery, as the company moved further into modern, functional tableware under the direction of designer Robert Jefferson.

During the late 1950s and 1960s, Poole focused on:

  • Creating practical “oven-to-table” ranges
  • Developing coordinated shapes across multiple patterns
  • Using transfer-printed designs to offer greater variety

Summer Glory forms part of this approach, sharing shapes and forms with other ranges from the same era, while offering a distinct decorative identity.

Design & Key Features

The design is characterised by:

  • A stylised floral and fauna motif featuring seed heads, grasses and blooms
  • Warm tones of orange, brown and golden yellow
  • A soft, creamy background typical of Poole tableware

The overall effect is more autumnal than its sister pattern Springtime, giving it a slightly richer and more traditional feel.

Summer Glory was produced on similar shapes to other Poole ranges of the time, reflecting the company’s approach of pairing consistent, practical forms with varied decorative finishes. This allowed customers to choose designs that suited their taste while retaining the same functional benefits.

Collectability & Demand

As a discontinued china pattern, Poole Summer Glory is sought after by collectors and those looking for replacement china to complete existing sets.

Its appeal comes from:

  • Its distinctive seasonal colour palette
  • Its compatibility with other neutral or vintage tableware
  • Its association with everyday use, meaning many original pieces have been lost or worn over time

Certain items, particularly larger serving pieces, can be more difficult to source in excellent condition.

Availability & Sourcing

Like other Poole Pottery patterns from this period, Summer Glory is no longer in production and is only available through the pre-loved market.

Availability can vary considerably depending on the piece:

  • Smaller items may appear more frequently
  • Larger or less commonly produced items can be harder to find

At MrPottery, we regularly source pieces as they become available, helping customers maintain and complete their sets over time.
