How to Spot Quality in Pre-Loved China and Pottery
Publié par Mike Eley le

Buying pre-loved china and pottery is often the only way to replace discontinued pieces and keep a much-loved set complete. But for many people, there’s always a lingering question:
“How do I know if what I’m buying is actually good quality?”
The good news is that high-quality pre-owned tableware is not only widely available, it’s often far better than people expect. The key is knowing what to look for, and just as importantly, what to avoid.
What “Good Condition” Really Means
When it comes to pre-loved china, condition isn’t simply a case of “perfect” or “damaged”.
Most pieces you’ll come across will show some level of natural wear, particularly if they’ve been used regularly over time. This can include:
- Light surface marks
- Minor cutlery scratching
- Slight fading of colour or pattern
These are all normal and, in many cases, barely noticeable in everyday use.
At MrPottery, we grade pieces as Excellent, Very Good or Good, based on their overall appearance and usability, but importantly, this grading is always within the context of the item’s age, rarity and availability.
What We Never Sell (and Why It Matters)
One of the most important things to understand is the difference between wear and damage.
Damage includes:
- Chips
- Cracks
- Nicks
- Crazing (fine cracking in the glaze)
These affect both the appearance and integrity of a piece, and in some cases, its usability.
👉 We never sell items with damage, regardless of how rare or desirable they may be.
This is one of the clearest ways to separate high-quality suppliers from general marketplaces, where damaged items are often listed without much explanation.
Firsts vs Seconds – What’s the Difference?
You’ll often hear the terms firsts and seconds when buying china.
- Firsts – pieces that met the manufacturer’s quality standards
- Seconds – pieces with minor manufacturing imperfections
What’s less well known is that many seconds are extremely minor, and sometimes virtually indistinguishable from first-quality items.
In fact:
- Some seconds are only marked on the base
- Others may show very slight variations or tiny blemishes
- And some aren’t marked at all
At MrPottery, we assess each piece on its own merits. A near-perfect second may be far more desirable than a first with noticeable wear.
Signs of Wear – What’s Acceptable?
Understanding wear is key to buying confidently.
✔ Acceptable (and expected):
- Light cutlery marks
- Slight wear to gilding
- Minor scuffing or surface marks
- Subtle variation in colour
⚠ Worth considering:
- Heavier scratching
- Noticeable fading
- More obvious wear to decorative elements
The key is balance. For rarer pieces, a slightly higher level of wear may be acceptable — especially if it means completing a set that would otherwise remain incomplete
Variations in Colour, Shape and Finish
Many patterns were produced over long periods, and changes were often made along the way.
You may notice:
- Slight differences in colour tone
- Changes in glaze (matt vs gloss)
- Variations in shape or rim style
This is completely normal and part of the character of pre-loved china.
For example, Denby pieces in particular can show subtle differences in glaze depending on when they were produced.
If you’re trying to match an exact version, it’s always worth checking — otherwise, many customers are simply happy to receive a high-quality replacement that blends well with their existing set.
Weight, Feel and Build Quality
One of the easiest ways to judge quality is simply how a piece feels.
Good quality pottery and china will typically:
- Feel solid and well balanced
- Have a consistent glaze
- Show attention to detail in shaping and finishing
This is especially true of well-known manufacturers such as Denby, Royal Doulton and Wedgwood, where durability was a key part of the design.
When to Buy – and When to Wait
If you’re replacing a key piece, such as a dinner plate or cup, it often makes sense to prioritise condition over speed.
However, for rarer items:
- You may need to act when something becomes available
- Waiting for a “perfect” example isn’t always realistic
This is where understanding condition grading becomes particularly important.
