Denby "Arabesque"

First introduced in the 1960s and designed by Gill Pemberton, Denby Arabesque became one of the most recognisable and widely collected designs produced by Denby Pottery. Originally named "Samarkand", the pattern was later renamed after a similar design appeared elsewhere.

The design features a bold arrangement of stylised circular motifs in rich tones of yellow, red and orange, set against a deep brown background. Early pieces were hand-painted, resulting in natural variations in colour and pattern, while later production moved to a more uniform transfer-printed finish.

Arabesque was produced in a wide range of shapes and pieces, many of which reflect the practical, durable qualities for which Denby is well known. Its distinctive look and strong identity have made it a favourite among collectors, often prompting a “love it or hate it” reaction due to its striking design.

As a now discontinued pattern, Denby Arabesque remains highly sought after by those looking to replace missing pieces or complete an existing set. Availability varies depending on the piece, as supply is dependent on what becomes available in the pre-loved market.
