Whittard "Cafe Au Lait"

Whittard Cafe au Lait is a bold and unmistakable design from Whittard of Chelsea. Its warm cream ceramic body is decorated with the words “CAFE AU LAIT” in large black serif lettering, wrapped around the exterior and repeated inside the rim.

The design was produced in more than one cup size, including a generously proportioned breakfast cup and saucer as well as the much larger jumbo cup and saucer. The oversized version has the broad, rounded shape and substantial handle associated with a traditional café bowl or large breakfast cup, making it particularly suited to milky coffee, hot chocolate or any drink where a decidedly generous serving is required.

The restrained cream and black colour scheme is a large part of the design's appeal. With no additional decoration, the typography becomes the main feature, giving Cafe au Lait a clean, confident appearance with a distinctly continental café influence.

Breakfast cups and saucers and jumbo cups and saucers are both known to have been produced. Other pieces may also have formed part of the range, although we have not yet found reliable evidence to confirm a wider service.
