Wedgwood Susie Cooper Cornpoppy was designed by Susie Cooper for Wedgwood and is one of her recognisable later designs. Rather than being an earlier Susie Cooper pattern later continued by Wedgwood, Cornpoppy appears to belong to her Wedgwood period, with sources generally dating the design to around 1971.
The pattern is simple, bold and very much of its time. A large red poppy is set against a plain white ground, with dark stems, leaves and seed head detail giving the design a strong graphic quality. The decoration is eye-catching without covering the whole surface, allowing the shape and white china body to remain an important part of the design.
Susie Cooper’s later Wedgwood designs often balanced modern simplicity with strong decorative ideas, and Cornpoppy is a good example of that approach. The vivid red flower gives the pattern immediate impact, while the restrained use of colour keeps it clean and elegant.
For many customers, Cornpoppy is a pattern they are trying to keep in regular use or complete as part of a Susie Cooper collection. As a discontinued Wedgwood range, it is often sought out by those looking to replace a broken plate, find a missing bowl, or add useful serving pieces to an existing set.
Availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. As with many discontinued Wedgwood and Susie Cooper designs, some pieces appear more often than others, while less common serving pieces may only turn up from time to time.
