Poole Pottery "Figures - Blue Dolphin Glaze"

Poole Pottery Wildlife Figures Blue Dolphin Glaze

Poole Pottery Figures - Blue Dolphin Glaze is one of the most recognisable and collectible of all Poole Pottery decorative ranges. Introduced in 1967, these glossy blue and black earthenware figures became especially popular with visitors to Poole, with dolphins leading the way, but the range also included other marine and animal subjects.

Poole Pottery Figures - Blue Dolphin Glaze holds a special place in the factory’s decorative output. First introduced in 1967, the range centred on animal and marine figures finished in the distinctive Blue Dolphin glaze, a striking combination of deep black and vivid blue that proved enormously popular for many years. Dolphin models were especially well loved and became closely associated with Poole Pottery itself, particularly through the factory shop on Poole Quay.

Although dolphins are the best known, the range extended well beyond them. Over the years Poole produced a variety of figures including fish, seals, seabirds and other animal subjects, giving collectors plenty to look out for. Some related figures were also produced in other glazes, and a number of pieces were hand painted, but the Blue Dolphin examples remain among the most iconic.

The glaze itself gives these figures much of their appeal. The rich blue tones, darker highlights and glossy finish help emphasise the modelling, particularly on dolphins and other marine subjects where the sense of movement is part of the charm.

For many customers, Blue Dolphin Glaze figures are collected as individual decorative pieces. Some people look for a particular dolphin size or animal model, while others enjoy building a varied group of Poole decorative figures over time.

As these pieces are now discontinued, availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Larger dolphins and unusual animals can be especially sought after, so stock can vary considerably from one figure to another.
