Poole Pottery "New Stoneware (Pampas)"

Poole Pottery New Stoneware (Pampas) was introduced in 1967 and designed by Guy Sydenham. It was produced as a limited coffee set, hand-thrown, decorated and glazed by Alan White and Angela Wyburgh, making it quite different in character from Poole’s mass-produced tableware ranges.

The design has a strong studio pottery feel, with tall ribbed cups, simple saucers and a warm neutral glaze that suits the hand-thrown forms particularly well. The vertical ribbing gives the pieces texture and rhythm, while the soft brown and cream tones create a natural, earthy appearance.

Pampas was one of two known colourways in this New Stoneware coffee set, the other being the green-toned Serpentine version. Both are unusual Poole ranges, sitting somewhere between practical tableware and studio-influenced decorative pottery.

For collectors, New Stoneware (Pampas) is an interesting part of Poole’s late 1960s output, reflecting the factory’s willingness to explore more individual, handmade-looking pieces alongside its better known tableware and decorative ranges.

As a discontinued and limited Poole range, availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Individual cups, saucers and related coffee set pieces may only appear occasionally, and matching by glaze tone and shape is worth checking carefully.
