Poole Pottery Herb Garden was designed by Robert Jefferson in 1961 and issued as an oven-to-tableware range in 1963. It was produced on the same general shapes and white glaze associated with Poole’s Cameo tableware, giving the range a clean, modern base for its botanical decoration.
The design features finely drawn herb motifs in dark green, with the decoration used across serving and oven-to-table pieces as well as accompanying tableware. The look is crisp and graphic, with the herb illustrations standing out clearly against the white glazed body.
Herb Garden appears to have begun as a more specialist oven-to-tableware range, with plates and additional pieces added later. These accompanying pieces do not seem to have been made for as long as some of Poole’s larger tableware services, which helps explain why certain items can be difficult to find today.
For many customers, Herb Garden is a pattern they are trying to keep in regular use, particularly where serving dishes, jugs or other practical pieces are part of an existing set. Its simple green and white styling also makes it appealing to collectors of Poole’s early 1960s tableware designs.
Availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Some pieces appear more often than others, while plates and less common serving items may only turn up from time to time.
