Poole Pottery Fresco Wash was introduced in 1997 and was created by Rachel Barker and Andrew Brickett. It was produced as a complementary design to Poole’s popular Fresco range, sharing the same relaxed, hand-decorated character but without the olive motif of the main pattern.
The design uses brushed slip underglaze decoration in soft terracotta and cream tones, giving each piece a warm, painterly appearance. Rather than having a repeated printed pattern, Fresco Wash relies on sweeping brush marks and tonal variation, so individual pieces naturally differ from one another.
Fresco Wash works especially well as a companion to standard Fresco, and many customers have mixed the two designs within the same service. The plain brushed surface makes it useful as a quieter contrast to the olive and leaf decoration of Fresco, while still feeling clearly connected in style, shape and colour.
When matching Fresco Wash, it is worth remembering that the brushed finish can vary noticeably from piece to piece. Differences in tone, depth and brush placement are part of the design’s character rather than a separate pattern.
For many customers, Fresco Wash is sought out to complete or extend an existing Fresco or Fresco Wash service. As a discontinued Poole range, availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market, and some pieces may only appear from time to time.
