Poole Pottery Dorset Fruit was introduced in 1990 and was designed by Alan Clarke. It was an important later Poole design, helping to establish the use of traditional sponge decoration within the factory’s tableware ranges. The result was bright, informal and instantly recognisable, with a country kitchen feel that quickly caught customers’ imaginations.
The pattern was produced with a variety of fruit motifs, including apples, grapes, lemons, cherries, oranges and plums. Some customers prefer to collect one particular fruit, while others enjoy the more relaxed mix and match approach that Dorset Fruit naturally encourages.
The design has a hand-finished quality, with sponged fruit, leafy borders and a blue rim giving the pieces their distinctive look. As with many Poole designs from this period, subtle differences in colour density, sponge work and placement are part of the pattern’s character.
For many customers, Dorset Fruit is a pattern they are trying to keep in regular use. As a discontinued Poole range, it is often sought out by those looking to replace a broken plate, find a missing cup and saucer, or add useful serving pieces to an existing set.
When matching Dorset Fruit, please check that your pieces are original Poole Pottery Dorset Fruit, as later Poole-inspired and tribute pieces can differ slightly in shape, backstamp and finish. Availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market, and particular fruits or shapes may only appear from time to time.
