Poole Pottery Desert Song was issued in the early 1960s and was designed by Pat Summers. It was produced on Poole’s Contour shape, one of the modern tableware shapes designed by Robert Jefferson as the factory moved into a more contemporary style of tableware.

The pattern uses two closely related treatments. Cups, jugs, coffee pots and other containing ware are usually finished with a rich browny orange exterior and clean white interior, while the plates and saucers feature a black floral border design with flowing orange line detail. Together, the two elements create a warm, distinctive service with a strong 1960s Poole character.

Desert Song is also useful for customers trying to match the original orange Poole Arabesque design, as the Desert Song cups and other containing ware were used to make up the rest of that service. If you are matching Arabesque, it is therefore worth checking Desert Song pieces as well, especially for cups, saucers, jugs and similar items.

For many customers, Desert Song is a pattern they are trying to keep in regular use. As a discontinued Poole range, it is often sought out by those looking to replace a broken plate, find a missing cup and saucer, or add useful serving pieces to an existing set.

Availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Because Desert Song includes both decorated flatware and plainer coloured containing ware, it is worth checking the shape, colour and decoration carefully when matching existing pieces.
