Poole Pottery "Chestnut"

Poole Pottery Chestnut

Poole Pottery Chestnut was introduced in 1965 and was the first of Robert Jefferson’s Compact tableware designs to be issued. The Compact shape was an important modern development for Poole, with clean, practical forms and distinctive ribbed detailing that gave the range a very contemporary look for the mid 1960s.

Chestnut features a deep reddish brown exterior glaze, contrasted with white interiors and finely ribbed borders or bases. The result is warm, bold and practical, with a strong mid-century feel that still looks very usable today. The colour works especially well on coffee pots, jugs, lidded serving pieces and the broad-rimmed plates.

The range proved popular with Poole customers and was produced across an extensive selection of tableware. Cups, saucers, plates, bowls, jugs, tureens, coffee pots, condiments and serving pieces can all be found, making Chestnut one of the more complete and useful Compact ranges for those building or maintaining a service.

For many customers, Chestnut is a pattern they are trying to keep in everyday use. As a discontinued Poole range, it is often sought out by those looking to replace a broken dinner plate, find a missing cup and saucer, or add useful serving pieces to an existing set.

Availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Because Chestnut was a popular working tableware range, some pieces are easier to find than others, while heavily used items such as plates, bowls and mugs may be more sought after.
