Poole Pottery "Charcoal"

Poole Pottery Charcoal is a discontinued Compact range design from the mid 1960s. With its bold black and white contrast, ribbed detail and clean modern shape, it has a sharper, more graphic look than many of Poole’s warmer-toned tableware ranges.

Poole Pottery Charcoal was issued in the mid 1960s on Poole’s Compact shape, one of the factory’s important modern tableware forms designed by Robert Jefferson. The same shape was also used for Chestnut, one of the better known Compact designs from the period.
Charcoal has a crisp monochrome look, with glossy black areas contrasted against white interiors and ribbed white detail. The dark border on plates and saucers gives the design a strong, graphic finish, while the simple Compact shapes keep the range practical and uncluttered.
Although Charcoal did not remain in production for as long as Chestnut, its clean black and white styling has aged particularly well. It has become increasingly appreciated by collectors and by customers who like Poole’s more modern, design-led tableware from the 1960s.
For many customers, Charcoal is a pattern they are trying to keep in regular use. As a discontinued Poole range, it is often sought out by those looking to replace a broken cup, find a missing saucer, or add extra pieces to an existing Compact service.
Availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Because Charcoal is less commonly found than some other Poole Compact ranges, individual pieces may only appear from time to time.
