Poole Pottery Celadon was introduced in the mid 1950s and is one of the best known colours associated with Poole’s Cameo tableware. A 1956 Poole colour schemes sheet shows Celadon Green alongside Blue Moon as part of the factory’s slip-decorated Cameo colours.
The design is simple, elegant and very recognisably Poole. The exterior is finished in a glossy pale green glaze, while the interior can vary from snow white to a warmer cream tone. These differences are usually connected with production period and are part of the character of a long-running discontinued range.
Celadon was made for a number of years and can be found across a wide variety of pieces, including plates, bowls, cups, saucers, teapots, coffee pots, jugs, lidded serving pieces and smaller accessories. Because of its long production life, some shape variations are also found, including rimmed and unrimmed plates.
For many customers, Celadon is a pattern they are trying to keep in everyday use. As a discontinued Poole range, it is often sought out by those looking to replace a broken plate, find a missing cup and saucer, or add useful serving pieces to an existing set.
Availability depends entirely on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. When matching existing pieces, it is worth allowing for small variations in glaze tone, interior colour and shape detail, especially between earlier and later examples.
