Poole Pottery Broadstone was issued in the 1970s and produced on Poole’s popular Compact shape. The Compact range was designed by Robert Jefferson and had already been used for a number of important Poole designs, including Chestnut. Broadstone became one of the factory’s most familiar discontinued tableware ranges, helped by its practical shapes, warm glaze and extensive selection of pieces.
The design has a yellowish, lightly rustic background with speckling through the glaze and a dark chocolate brown rim. It is simple, useful and very recognisably Poole, with the clean Compact forms giving the range a modern but homely feel. Broadstone was made for a number of years, so it can be found across dinner plates, tea plates, bowls, cups, saucers, jugs, lidded serving pieces and other useful tableware.
IMPORTANT: -
Broadstone is sometimes confused with two related Poole ranges, Poole Parkstone and Poole Lakestone. If your pieces have a yellowish background, they are likely to be Broadstone. If they have a greyer stoneware-style background with heavy flecking and a dark chocolate brown rim, they are probably Parkstone. If the background is more lightly flecked with a milk chocolate brown rim, it may be Lakestone, although Lakestone is much less commonly seen.
Because these three ranges are easily mixed up, it is worth checking carefully before ordering replacement pieces. We have also written a more detailed guide to the differences between Poole Parkstone and Lakestone, which may help if you are unsure which version you have.
For many customers, Broadstone is a pattern they are trying to keep in regular use. As a discontinued Poole range, it is often sought out by those looking to replace a broken plate, find a missing cup and saucer, or add useful serving pieces to an existing set.
Availability depends on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Because Broadstone was a popular and practical everyday range, some pieces appear more often than others, while heavily used items such as dinner plates and bowls can be harder to find in good numbers.
