Poole Pottery "Azure"

Poole Pottery Azure

Poole Pottery Azure is an unusual discontinued design from Poole’s Compact range, finished in a smooth sky blue glaze. With its clean colour, simple forms and familiar ribbed edging, it has a very different feel from patterned Compact designs such as Parkstone and Broadstone.

Poole Pottery Azure is part of the wider Compact tableware family, one of Poole’s important modern tableware shapes. The Compact shape was designed by Robert Jefferson and was used for a variety of designs from the 1960s onwards, including familiar decorated ranges such as Parkstone and Broadstone.

Azure is a little different from many of the better known Compact patterns, as its appeal comes from the glaze colour rather than printed or hand-applied decoration. The soft sky blue finish gives the range a clean, calm appearance, while the ribbed edging and neat modern shapes keep it recognisably Poole.

The range sits comfortably within Poole’s post-war move towards practical, modern tableware, but its plain coloured finish gives it a quieter look than many of the bold 1960s and 1970s designs. Pieces such as coffee pots, jugs, lidded dishes and plates show the shape especially well, with the smooth glaze emphasising the form of each item.

As Azure is now discontinued, availability depends on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. Some pieces appear only occasionally, so it remains a useful range for customers looking to replace or add to an existing Poole Compact service.
