Poole Pottery Argosy was produced in the mid 1970s, during a period when Poole was using its popular Compact shape for a number of decorative tableware patterns. Argosy appears in Poole promotional material for Compact tableware decorated with glaze-reactive lithographs on the Parkstone glaze background.

The design has a simple but effective border pattern, with repeated stylised flowers and scrolling detail around the rim. The green, brown and orange colouring sits well against the softly speckled Parkstone ground, creating a relaxed, slightly rustic feel that fits neatly with Poole’s 1970s tableware style.

The Compact shape was designed by Robert Jefferson and became one of Poole’s key modern tableware shapes. Its clean forms gave patterns like Argosy a practical everyday setting, while still allowing the decoration to feel distinctive and recognisably Poole.

As Argosy is now discontinued, availability depends on what becomes available through the pre-loved market. As with other Parkstone-based Poole patterns, decorated plates are often the pieces customers are most keen to replace, and are often in short supply.
