Marks & Spencer "Red Damask"

Marks & Spencer Red Damask is an eye-catching floral tableware design built around a strong contrast of rich red decoration against white china. Large stylised flowers, leaves and curling stems give the pattern its damask-inspired appearance, combining traditional floral forms with a much bolder, more contemporary treatment.

The decoration is adapted particularly well to the different shapes within the range. On some of the plates and bowls the floral design forms a broad border around the edge, while cups, jugs and the teapot use larger sections of the scrolling motif across their sides. The matching mug, saucers and breakfast plate provide an interesting variation, reversing the colour scheme with white floral decoration against a red background.

Red Damask was produced as a fairly comprehensive table and tea service. Pieces known to have been made include dinner, breakfast and tea plates, cereal bowls, tea cups and saucers, mugs, milk jugs, sugar bowls and a teapot, giving plenty of scope for building or maintaining a matching service.

Its clean white ground and confident use of red make Red Damask particularly easy to recognise, while the variation in how the design is applied across different pieces gives the range more character than a simple repeating floral pattern.
