Hornsea Contrast was introduced in 1974 and went on to become Hornsea Pottery’s best selling oven to table range worldwide. Designed by Martin Hunt as the launch range for the new Lancaster factory, it combined strong modern shapes with a distinctive dark brown body, white glazed working surfaces and simple black and white banding. The design was such a success that it remained in production until 1992 and was added to the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1976.
Contrast has a confident, architectural feel, with a practical simplicity that suits everyday use beautifully. The rich brown body is set off by crisp white interiors and rims, while the banded decoration adds definition without overpowering the shape. Hornsea also developed a highly polished vitrified finish for the range, helping to create the smooth non porous surface that became one of its great strengths.
Part of the appeal of Contrast is the sheer breadth of the range. Over its long production life it extended across dinner, tea and coffee wares, serving pieces and later oven to table items, making it possible to build a very complete and highly practical set. Hornsea also used the shape for occasional decorated plates and special pieces, but it is the plain brown and white tableware that remains the classic expression of the design.
Contrast was not just commercially successful, it was also highly regarded for its design quality. Brian Heckford notes that it proved difficult to manufacture at first, but Hornsea refined both the production process and the polishing technique to create a range that was durable, distinctive and widely admired. Its popularity spread far beyond the UK, and it became one of the patterns most closely associated with Hornsea’s international reputation.
As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Contrast is now mainly found through the pre-loved market and remains especially popular with customers looking for replacement china to complete, extend or match an existing set. Availability can vary by piece, particularly for lidded items, serving ware, oven to table pieces and some of the less common shapes, so it is always worth checking back if you are looking for something specific.
When matching Hornsea Contrast replacement pieces, it is worth noting that later related ranges such as Contour, Alaska and Charisma can share broadly similar shapes. The dark brown body, white glazed interiors and the familiar black and white banding are usually the clearest guides to identifying classic Contrast.
