Hornsea Charisma was introduced in 1979 and was based on the Contrast shape, one of Hornsea Pottery’s most successful oven-to-table forms. First shown at the Harrogate Gift Fair, the range used a pale opalescent glaze with brown banding, while the upright pieces were decorated with a dark brown leaf motif and fine vertical line detail.
The result is a clean but characterful design, quieter than many floral tableware patterns but still unmistakably of its period. Plates and saucers are largely plain, with brown ring accents around the rim, while cups, jugs and other upright shapes carry the stylised leaf decoration. This gives Charisma a close visual relationship with Hornsea Alaska, particularly across flatware, although the decorated pieces give the range its own identity.
Brian Heckford records Charisma as a 1979 to 1980 range, which helps explain why it is less commonly encountered than long-running Hornsea patterns such as Saffron, Heirloom or Contrast. Its short production period, practical shape and subtle design make it an interesting choice for collectors who like Hornsea’s later tableware but prefer a lighter, more neutral look.
As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Charisma is now usually found through the pre-loved market and is sought by customers looking for replacement china to complete, extend or match an existing set. Availability can vary from piece to piece, especially where cups, saucers, plates and bowls need to be matched accurately within the same table setting.
When matching Charisma replacement pieces, it is worth checking the backstamp, shape and rim detail carefully. Some plain plates and saucers can appear very similar to Hornsea Alaska, while the stemmed leaf decoration on cups and other upright pieces is the clearest visual identifier for Charisma.
