Hornsea Love Story was introduced in 1980 and used the practical Contrast shape, one of Hornsea Pottery’s most successful tableware forms. The range has a brown body overglazed in white, with an all-over floral daisy style pattern printed in black or blue, giving it a lighter and more delicate appearance than many of Hornsea’s darker Contrast-based designs.

The design is charming without being overly fussy. Plates and bowls carry the floral pattern as a central roundel, framed by dark border lines around the rim, while cups and upright pieces show the small flower pattern around the body. The result is fresh, neat and very recognisably Hornsea, but with a softer look than patterns such as Contrast, Impact or Contour.

Love Story is one of Hornsea’s less commonly seen designs, which adds to its appeal for collectors and existing owners. Its simple blue and white colour palette makes it easy to live with, while the repeating floral motif gives the pattern enough detail to feel special. It is a good example of how Hornsea reused strong tableware shapes while giving each pattern its own personality.

As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Love Story is now mainly found through the pre-loved market and is often sought by customers looking for replacement china to complete, extend or match an existing set. Availability can vary by piece, particularly as Love Story is not one of the Hornsea patterns we see as regularly as the longer-running ranges.

When matching Hornsea Love Story replacement pieces, the key details to look for are the white glazed body, dark rim lines, blue floral daisy decoration and the familiar Contrast shape. These features help distinguish it from other blue and white Hornsea patterns and make it a lovely hidden gem within the Hornsea catalogue.
