Hornsea Heirloom Brown, often referred to as Autumn Brown, is the best known and most popular version of the Heirloom range. Designed by John Clappison, Heirloom became one of Hornsea Pottery’s major successes, and the brown colourway in particular is now instantly recognisable for its bold repeating motif and warm glossy finish.
The design has a strong retro character, with a repeating geometric pattern set against a deep autumnal brown ground. It captures the look of the period beautifully, but still feels practical and usable, which is one of the reasons it has remained so popular. Like the other Heirloom versions, it was produced using Hornsea’s distinctive glaze resist printing method, giving the decoration a crisp, slightly raised appearance that adds real depth and texture to the finished pieces.
Heirloom was a hugely important range for Hornsea and sold widely at home and abroad. The brown version proved especially successful and was made across a broad selection of shapes, from everyday tea and dinner wares through to the kitchen pieces that many buyers remember so fondly. Storage jars, preserve jars, spice jars and related accessories are a particularly appealing part of the range and help make Heirloom Brown one of Hornsea’s most characterful and versatile designs.
As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Heirloom Brown remains very much in demand with buyers looking for replacement china to complete or expand an existing set. Availability varies from piece to piece, and while some items turn up more regularly, others can be much harder to source, especially when customers are trying to match specific tableware or kitchen storage pieces.
When identifying Hornsea Heirloom Brown, look for the familiar straight sided shapes, the repeated geometric motif and the rich brown glaze that gives the range its warm, autumnal feel. Whether chosen for everyday use, display or collecting, it remains one of the standout patterns in the Hornsea story.
