Hornsea Desire was introduced in 1983 and formed part of Hornsea’s early 1980s “Romantic Look” collection. Desire is recognised as a compact tableware range produced on the award-winning Concord shape, with a white body covered in a pattern of small red hearts, giving the design a gentle and decorative appeal.
The pattern is simple but very distinctive. Rather than using large floral sprays or heavy banding, Desire relies on a repeated heart motif, softened by small dot accents, across a pale background. On cups and upright pieces the design wraps neatly around the body, while the plain rim and simple shape keep the overall look light and uncluttered.
Desire belongs to the same early 1980s period as Hornsea’s other softer decorative ranges, but it has a character of its own. The use of the Concord shape gives the pieces a compact, modern outline, while the small heart pattern makes the range feel warmer and more playful than many of Hornsea’s plainer tableware designs.
As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Desire is now mainly found through the pre-loved market and is often sought by customers looking for replacement china to complete, extend or match an existing set. Availability can vary, especially because Desire was a compact range rather than one of Hornsea’s larger long-running services, so cups, saucers, plates and bowls may appear only occasionally.
When matching Hornsea Desire replacement pieces, the key details to look for are the Concord shape, the clean white body and the repeated small red heart decoration. The pattern can look quite understated at first glance, but the heart motif is the clearest identifier.
