Hornsea Danube was introduced in 1983 and was based on the highly regarded Contrast shape, one of Hornsea Pottery’s most successful tableware forms. Brian Heckford records Danube as featuring blue banded decoration on a white glazed body, with the blue bands carried around the edges of flatware and around the bases and lids of pots.
The design is restrained but very effective. On cups and other upright pieces, the blue linework sits neatly around the lower body, while plates and saucers carry the decoration around the rim. A brown trim adds definition and links Danube visually to the wider Hornsea Contrast family, while the white ground gives the range a lighter, cleaner appearance than classic brown Contrast.
Danube was displayed as part of Hornsea’s early 1980s “Romantic Look”, although it is less floral and less decorative than some of the other ranges in that group. Its appeal lies in the balance between simplicity and shape, combining a crisp blue and white scheme with the practical Hornsea forms used for dinner, tea, coffee and serving pieces.
As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Danube is now mainly found through the pre-loved market and is often sought by customers looking for replacement china to complete, extend or match an existing set. Availability can vary by piece, especially where buyers are trying to match cups, saucers, plates, bowls, lidded items or serving ware from the same range.
When matching Hornsea Danube replacement pieces, the key details to look for are the white glazed body, blue banded decoration, brown trim and familiar Contrast shape. These features help distinguish Danube from other simple blue and white Hornsea patterns and from related Contrast-shape ranges of the same period.
