Hornsea Cornrose first appeared in autumn 1978 and remained in production until 1986. Based on Hornsea’s award-winning Contrast shape, it used a direct screen-printed sepia-brown design of traditional cornrose poppies and leaves, set against a textured cream glaze. The rims of the flatware and the edges of the holloware were finished in sepia brown, giving the pattern its familiar warm, earthy outline.

The design has a softer, more decorative feel than plain Contrast, but it keeps the same practical oven to table character. Plates and rimmed bowls are generally plain in the centre, with the warm cream glaze and brown rim detail providing the decoration, while straight-sided bowls carry the cornrose pattern around the outside. Cups, jugs, lidded pots and other upright pieces also use the floral motif around the sides, giving the range its distinctive botanical character without overwhelming every piece.

Cornrose had some early production challenges, particularly in combining the Vitramic body with direct resist screen printing, but once those issues were overcome the range helped open the catering market for Hornsea Pottery. It was produced across a broad selection of dinner, tea, coffee, serving and oven to table pieces, which is one reason it remains such a practical pattern for collectors and everyday users.

As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Cornrose is now mainly found through the pre-loved market and is often sought by customers looking for replacement china to complete, extend or match an existing set. Availability can vary by piece, especially for teapots, coffee pots, lidded serving dishes, storage jars and matching saucers, so it is worth checking back if the exact piece you need is not currently available.

When matching Cornrose replacement pieces, the warm cream glaze, chocolate brown rim detail and sepia floral decoration on selected shapes are the key features to look for. Because the range uses the Contrast shape, some plain flatware may look similar beside related Hornsea designs, so cups, straight-sided bowls and holloware can be especially useful for confirming the pattern.
