Hornsea Alaska was introduced in 1977 and made for sale through Sainsbury’s stores. It used the strong Contrast body, one of Hornsea’s most successful oven-to-table shapes, but softened the look with an ivory-white overglaze. The underlying brown body shows through as a neat line around the rims and foot rings, giving Alaska a clean, practical appearance with just enough contrast to define the shape.

The design is very restrained compared with many of Hornsea’s more decorative 1970s ranges. Plates, saucers and bowls have a crisp white surface with fine brown ring accents, while holloware such as jugs, cups and serving pieces share the same robust, modern form. This makes Alaska easy to mix into a practical table setting and particularly appealing to customers who prefer Hornsea’s shape and quality without a strong printed pattern.

Because Alaska belongs to the wider Contrast family, some shapes are closely related to other Hornsea ranges of the period. Certain plates and saucers can be very similar to those found in Hornsea Charisma, so backstamps, dimensions and the exact rim detail can be useful when matching pieces.

As a discontinued Hornsea Pottery range, Alaska is now mainly found through the pre-loved market. It is often sought by customers looking for replacement china to complete or extend an existing set, particularly where a simple white Hornsea design is wanted for everyday use. Availability can vary by piece, especially across serving items and holloware.
