Denby Westbury was introduced in the early 1970s and designed by Gill Pemberton in collaboration with Glyn Colledge. It reflects the strong influence of folk art styling that was popular at the time, combining bold floral motifs with a distinctive shaded slip ground.
The design is characterised by its large, expressive flowers in tones of gold, pink and brown, set against a softly graduated background. This shaded effect gives the pattern a warm, slightly rustic feel while still retaining the durability and practicality expected from Denby stoneware.
Westbury was produced for a relatively short period compared to some of Denby’s more widely recognised ranges, and is therefore less commonly seen today. One of its distinguishing features is its unique backstamp, with many pieces carrying a “Westbury” script mark alongside the standard Denby stamp.
As a discontinued design, Denby Westbury is sought after by those looking for replacement china to complete or extend an existing set. Availability varies depending on the piece, with some items proving particularly difficult to source.
When matching Westbury, slight variations in the shading of the background and the strength of the floral decoration can occur. These differences are typical of the production methods used at the time and form part of the design’s character.
