Denby Unknown Pattern 03a (Sahara style) appears to be closely related to the well known Denby Sahara design, sharing a similar form and overall aesthetic, but with some notable differences in both tone and finish.
The background carries a warmer, more yellow hue than typically seen on Sahara, while the rim features a softer, more diffused mottled effect rather than the stronger tortoiseshell style banding usually associated with that range. The result is a more subtle and understated appearance.
Pieces such as this are often the result of Denby’s experimentation with glazes during the late 1960s and 1970s, where variations in colour and finish were sometimes produced in smaller runs, or for specific markets, and not always formally documented as separate named patterns.
As with many of these lesser known designs, availability is dependent on what becomes available in the pre-loved market, and pieces can be difficult to source.
Do you know the name of this design? It is similar to Sahara but with a more yellowy background and mottled rim. If you do happen to know its name we would love to hear from you!
These subtle variations and the mystery behind them are all part of the charm for collectors and Denby enthusiasts alike.
