Denby Savannah was introduced in 1978 and holds a special place in Denby’s history as the final decorative series of individually hand-painted ware by designer Glyn Colledge. Produced at a time when traditional hand-decoration was being phased out, Savannah represents the end of an era for this style of Denby production.
The design is characterised by its matt glaze and expressive, free-flowing brushwork, with sweeping motifs in rich browns, soft creams and warm orange tones. Each piece carries a sense of movement and individuality, reflecting the hand-applied nature of the decoration.
Unlike Denby’s more structured tableware patterns, Savannah was produced primarily as decorative ware, including vases and bowls, with bold shapes providing the perfect canvas for its striking surface design.
As a now discontinued and comparatively short-lived series, Denby Savannah is particularly appealing to collectors and those drawn to Denby’s more artistic and expressive pieces. Availability can be limited, especially for specific shapes, as pieces appear only occasionally on the pre-loved market.
Due to its hand-painted nature, variations in pattern, brushstroke and tone are to be expected, and form an important part of the charm and individuality of each piece.
