Read more about Denby Rondo
Denby Rondo was introduced in 1976 and designed by Gill Pemberton, marking a noticeable departure from many of Denby’s earlier, more traditional designs. The range reflects the influence of mid 1970s design trends, with a focus on form, texture and a more sculptural approach to everyday tableware.
The design is characterised by its strong vertical shaping and distinctive decorative detailing, including the toothed banding often seen around the upper sections of pieces. Recessed lids and carefully considered proportions give the range a cohesive, almost architectural feel, with each item designed to sit neatly within the overall look.
The glaze combines warm, earthy tones, typically blending soft browns and lighter highlights, creating a subtle contrast that enhances the textured surfaces. This approach allows the form of each piece to take centre stage, with the decoration supporting rather than dominating the design.
Rondo was produced as a full service, including plates, bowls, cups and a range of teaware and serving pieces, many of which make full use of the range’s distinctive shaping and detailing.
Now discontinued, Denby Rondo is less commonly seen than some other Denby patterns of the period, making it particularly appealing to collectors and those looking to replace or extend an existing set. Availability can vary depending on the piece, as stock depends on what becomes available in the pre-loved market.
When matching Denby Rondo, it is worth noting that variations can occur in the depth and tone of the glaze, as well as the definition of the textured detailing. These subtle differences are typical of Denby’s production methods and form part of the character of the pattern.
