Denby Rochester was introduced in 1976 as one of a small group of designs created by Gill Pemberton during that period. Reflecting the changing tastes of the mid 1970s, the range combines strong colour with simpler, more contemporary forms compared to earlier Denby designs.
The pattern features a rich green glaze applied to the exterior of pieces, paired with clean white interiors. The glaze has a slightly varied, textured appearance, giving the range depth while retaining the practical qualities expected of Denby stoneware.
Rochester was produced on bold shapes typical of the time, with confident profiles and a functional, modern feel. Although not widely documented as having a long production run, the pattern sits comfortably alongside other Denby green designs, offering a more understated alternative to later ranges such as Denby Regency Green.
As with most Denby tableware, Rochester would have been produced as a practical working range, including plates, bowls, cups and a selection of serving pieces designed for everyday use.
Now discontinued, Denby Rochester is relatively scarce and is sought after by collectors and those looking to replace or extend an existing set. Availability can vary significantly depending on the piece, as stock depends on what becomes available in the pre-loved market.
When matching Denby Rochester, it is worth noting that variations can occur in the tone and depth of the green glaze. These subtle differences are typical of Denby’s production methods and form part of the character of the pattern.
