Denby Potters Wheel (Rust) was designed by David Yorath and introduced in 1973, becoming one of Denby’s most popular and enduring designs of the decade. Built around a simple but highly effective concept, the range combined practical stoneware with a distinctive visual identity based on concentric banding.
The design features an oatmeal coloured body with a soft milk chocolate rim, while the centre is decorated with a concentric ring leading into a solid coloured well. In the Rust variation, this centre is finished in warm tan or rust tones, giving the pattern a natural, earthy feel that proved especially popular at the time.
Potters Wheel was produced in several colourways, including Denby Potters Wheel (Blue), Denby Potters Wheel (Green) and Denby Potters Wheel (Yellow). These alternative versions were often produced with export markets in mind, particularly the United States, while the Rust version remained the most widely available and commonly found.
As a range, Potters Wheel was produced as a full service, including plates, bowls, cups and a wide selection of oven-to-table pieces. Some supporting items, such as saucers, are identical across the different colourways and can be used interchangeably, reflecting the shared shapes and design structure across the range.
Now discontinued, Denby Potters Wheel (Rust) remains a popular choice for those looking to replace or extend an existing set. Availability can vary depending on the piece, with certain items appearing more frequently than others as stock becomes available in the pre-loved market.
When matching Denby Potters Wheel (Rust), it is worth noting that variations can occur in the depth of the glaze and the intensity of the central colour. These subtle differences are typical of Denby’s production methods and sit comfortably within the overall look of the pattern.
