Denby Mandarin was introduced in 1991 as part of Denby Pottery’s Columbia Series and was designed by Claire Bernard. The range combines a soft, neutral base with gentle blue floral decoration, giving it a calm and understated appearance.
One of the defining features of Mandarin is its distinctive shaping. Many of the serving and pouring pieces incorporate a subtle horizontal line or ledge through the form, as seen on teapots and jugs, while plates, bowls and saucers feature a corresponding inset ridge around the border. These details create a cohesive design language across the range, adding interest without overwhelming the decoration.
The matt glaze enhances the softness of the colour palette and gives the pieces a tactile, understated finish. This combination of form, surface and decoration reflects Denby’s design direction during the early 1990s, where shape played as important a role as pattern.
Produced across a range of tableware and serving items, Denby Mandarin offers both practicality and a distinctive visual identity.
As a discontinued design, Denby Mandarin is often sought after by those looking to complete or extend an existing set. Availability can vary depending on the piece, as supply is dependent on what becomes available in the pre-loved market.
