Denby "Gypsy"

Denby Gypsy

Denby Gypsy is a distinctive 1970s design, first introduced in 1972 and featuring a dusky pink wild rose motif. As the earliest and most enduring of three related patterns, it combines decorative floral styling with Denby’s practical stoneware forms.

Denby Gypsy was introduced in 1972 and was the first of a group of three closely related patterns produced during the 1970s, alongside Denby Troubador and Denby Minstrel. Of the three, Gypsy proved to be the most successful and longest running, with Troubador also popular, while Minstrel was produced for a shorter period.

The design is characterised by its dusky pink wild rose motif, giving the range a softer and more decorative feel compared to many of Denby’s plainer glaze-led designs of the period.

One notable feature of Gypsy is the variation in colour depth that can be found between pieces. Some examples display a deeper, slightly blue-toned pink, sometimes accompanied by a 'bleeding' centre to the flowers, while others show the softer pink more typically associated with the pattern. These variations are a result of production differences over time rather than faults, but can be important when matching existing items.

Because of this, pieces with more noticeable colour variation are sometimes graded slightly lower, even when they are otherwise in excellent condition. While some customers are happy to mix these variations, others prefer a closer colour match across their set.

Produced across a wide range of items, Gypsy allowed customers to build a complete and coordinated service, from everyday tableware through to serving pieces.

As a discontinued Denby pattern, Gypsy remains sought after by collectors and by those looking to replace or extend an existing set. Availability can vary depending on the item, as supply is dependent on what becomes available on the pre-loved market.

We regularly source Denby Gypsy from the pre-loved market, so availability changes frequently.
