Created during a period when Glyn and Albert Colledge collaborated on a number of contemporary styled giftware designs, Cloisonne combined Albert Colledge’s distinctive shapes with Glyn Colledge’s decorative surface work.
The design was produced on a matt grey ground highlighted with thick, jewel-like colours in red, green, blue, yellow and white. Owing to the tendency of the glazes to run, the decoration was used mainly on flatware and decorative pieces, where its bold and highly individual character could be shown to best effect.
Denby Cloisonne was decorated with abstract motifs and stylised domestic forms including bottles, fruits and vegetables, very much in keeping with the design language of the 1950s. The pattern also featured colourful cockerels, descended from the earlier Flair cockerels Glyn had drawn some ten years before.
Produced primarily as decorative ware and giftware rather than as a full practical tableware range, Cloisonne remains especially appealing to collectors of mid-century Denby and to those drawn to its strong period styling and unusual colour palette.
As a now discontinued and relatively early Denby design, Cloisonne can be difficult to find, with availability depending heavily on the specific form and decoration. Supply is dependent on what becomes available in the pre-loved market.
We regularly source Denby Cloisonne from the pre-loved market, so availability changes frequently.
