The Bokhara range is characterised by its striking and unusual shaping, most notably in the plates, which feature flowing curved scroll patterns. This gave the pattern a distinctive and exotic feel, setting it apart from more conventional tableware of the time.
Created during a period when Denby was producing some of its most individual tableware, Bokhara combined Gill Pemberton’s confident shapes with decorative influences that gave the range a strong visual identity. Its bold styling remains highly recognisable today.
In 1969, a variation known as Kismet, issued as Bokhara Cluster in England, was introduced. This version retained the same distinctive shapes and overall character but replaced the scroll motifs with a hand-painted design of stylised daisy heads with yellow centres, giving the range a slightly softer decorative effect while retaining the bold personality of the original.
As a now discontinued pattern, Denby Bokhara / Kismet is of particular interest to collectors and those looking for replacement china to complete or extend an existing set. Due to its age, availability can be more limited, especially for specific pieces.
