J & G Meakin "Poppy", A Bright and Cheerful 1970s Classic
Geposted von Mike Eley am

Few tableware designs capture the warm, optimistic feel of the 1970s quite like J & G Meakin "Poppy". With its bold orange and red floral decoration, simple shapes and unmistakably retro styling, it has become one of those patterns that instantly transports people back to family kitchens, everyday meals and the comforting practicality of British pottery from the period.
Produced by J & G Meakin during the 1970s, Poppy reflected the growing move towards brighter, more informal tableware. Traditional floral china had certainly not disappeared, but designs were becoming bolder, more relaxed and much more suited to modern family life. The large stylised poppy flowers, usually in warm shades of orange, red and brown, perfectly captured the colour palette of the era.
Like many popular Staffordshire tableware ranges of the time, Poppy was designed to be practical as well as decorative. Dinner services were expected to cope with daily use rather than being reserved only for “best”. As a result, pieces were robust, easy to mix into everyday kitchens and available in a wide range of useful shapes.
The 1960s and 1970s proved to be a particularly creative period for J & G Meakin and the wider Staffordshire pottery industry. The company became closely associated with influential designers and contemporary tableware trends, particularly following the takeover of Midwinter in 1968. This brought further modern design influence into the business, with many collectors today also linking Meakin wares of the period with designers such as Jessie Tait and Eve Midwinter.
Poppy itself is often associated with designer Eve Midwinter and was introduced around 1973, during the height of the British retro floral boom. It's simple, striking decoration worked particularly well on the rounded Meakin shapes of the period and remains highly recognisable today.
One of the enduring appeals of J & G Meakin Poppy is that it still feels usable rather than purely decorative. While many surviving pieces are now collected for their nostalgic value, plenty continue to see everyday use in kitchens across the UK. The cheerful design suits both vintage-inspired interiors and more eclectic modern homes.
As a now discontinued pattern, J & G Meakin Poppy is increasingly sought after by collectors and those looking to replace missing pieces from an existing set. Dinner plates, mugs and serving ware can sometimes be harder to find than smaller tea ware items, particularly in good condition after decades of regular use.
Like many 1970s tableware designs, slight variation in colour intensity and print clarity can occur between pieces, especially where production spanned a number of years. These subtle differences are part of the charm of the pattern and reflect the manufacturing methods of the time.
